Distracted Driving

Numerous public opinion surveys show most drivers believe that using cell phones while driving is dangerous. Indeed, talking on cell phones while driving is estimated to increase crash risk fourfold.

Over 50 research studies have shown that using phones while driving is risky. Each year, it results in about 1.6 million crashes, hundreds of thousands of injuries, and thousands of deaths.

NSC aims to prevent these crashes, injuries and deaths due to cell phone use while driving. For the many ways to help make our roads safer, visit our resources dedicated to:

NSC Distracted Driving CAMPAIGN

Dear Colleague:

Distracted driving, specifically cell phone use while driving, has received significant attention lately. While many people understand the increased crash risks caused by drivers texting while driving, the lack of understanding about the dangers of hands-free phones remains a challenge. Driving while using a cell phone requires the brain to multitask - a process it is incapable of doing safely while driving. To explain the limitations of the human brain as it pertains to multitasking, the National Safety Council has developed a white paper.

The paper includes information on the limitations of the brain, how multitasking impairs driving performance, the inability of the brain to capture driving cues when a person is multitasking and why people do not realize they are, in fact, distracted when using a cell phone while driving.

NSC encourages you to share this white paper with your colleagues, business partners, customers, friends and families. Understanding the dangers of hands-free phones while driving will help people make the right decision and put down the phone while driving.

Remember, on the road, off the phone.

Sincerely,

Janet Froetscher
President and CEO
